2019 Home Site Visits

Wildfire Adapted Partnership will be accepting requests for site visits beginning May 1st! Upon receiving your request, a coordinator for your county will be in touch to schedule an at-home assessment, at which time your property will be evaluated for wildfire risks and a recommended scope of work provided to you.

Defensible Space Cost Share Program

You may be eligible for defensible space cost-share assistance to reduce vegetation that makes your home vulnerable to wildfires. To find out how to make your home more fire safe and what resources are available to support forest thinning work on your property, contact your Wildfire Adapted County Coordinator.  A Home Ignition Zone specialist will provide a free home wildfire risk assessment and will mark trees for removal if you choose to pursue the defensible space cost-share program at that time.

The Chipper Rental Rebate Program will return on May 1st, 2019!

This program encourages the chipping of slash from reducing flammable vegetation conducted on any privately-owned property in Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma, and San Juan counties in Colorado. Wildfire Adapted Partnership will reimburse the homeowner 50% of the cost, up to $250.

You may choose to rent a chipper yourself or hire a mitigation company to provide chipping services, assuming all requirements are met. You can email your application to chipper@wildfireadapted.org or print and mail to our office.

This program is valid for chipping conducted May 1, 2019 through September 30, 2019 for as long as funds remain available. Early submission is advised.

Welcome: Alex Graf

Alex joined WAP as the Montezuma County Coordinator in April of 2019.
He grew up in the foothills of the Catskill mountains in New York State and attended Bard College in the Hudson Valley where he graduated with a BA in Environmental and Urban Studies. He is deeply interested in forest ecology, historical land use, plant identification, animal tracking, and bird language. He also has experience in field research and environmental education in various bioregions, from the eastern woodlands and swamps, to the northern boreal forests, to the southwestern alpine and desert communities. Since moving to southwestern Colorado in 2017, he has become absorbed with the intricacies of the Pinon-Juniper landscape he calls home. Additionally, Alex is a musician and is involved in his partner’s small scale vegetable farm.

My Southwest Forest

My Southwest Forest is a new partnership between the American Forest Foundation (AFF), Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS), and National Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), designed to help private landowners in southwestern Colorado protect and restore our beautiful forested landscapes.

Through My Southwest Forest, qualified forest landowners are eligible for a free visit from a local CSFS forester. During this visit, the forester will walk through management opportunities for your land. After the visit, qualified landowners will also be eligible for technical and financial assistance to create a forest management plan and take action.

2019 NFPA and State Farm Wildfire Community Preparedness Day Grant Winners

To encourage planning and participating in projects on Wildfire Community Preparedness Day, May 4th, 2019, NFPA and State Farm have partnered to award grants to communities that plan activities aimed at reducing potential loss of life, property, and natural resources to wildfire. Wildfire Community Preparedness Day projects can also help strengthen relationships between residents and the local fire department, land management agencies, community leaders, and elected officials.

WAP's own Bill Trimarco, the Archuleta County Coordinator, received one of the grants to support Archuleta's May 4th activities at Pagosa Lakes POA. Other winners from our area include Paulette Church in Falls Creek Ranch and Judy Bolton in Aspen Trails.

A full list of 2019 winners from across the country can be found HERE
