4th of July in Rico

Alex Graf, our Montezuma and Dolores County Coordinator, joined the Dolores Watershed Resilient Forest (DWRF) Collaborative at the 4th of July Parade in Rico. Smokey Bear also made an appearance and helped educate Rico residents and holiday travelers about the missions of both WAP and DWRF. Thank you to the Rico Fire Department and the Town of Rico for hosting such a great event!

Vallecito Slash Depot

Marilyn McCord helpfully provided us with a few pictures from the Vallecito Slash Depot, which operated over a weekend in late June and will open again on July 19th and 20th. 55 neighbors showed up to help, clocking more than 500 hours of mitigation work on their properties. The Depot is made possible by individual donations and PRID (Pine River Irrigation District), a helpful sponsor. Let your friends in Vallecito know about this awesome opportunity to chip their woody slash!

Neighborhood Spotlight: PLPOA

The Pagosa Lakes Property Owners Association is a community of over 6,600 residences in Archuleta County and is surrounded on three sides by the San Juan National Forest. Wildfire Adapted Partnership currently has six volunteer Neighborhood Ambassadors living in Pagosa Lakes: Beverly Cuyler, Dave Cuyler, Al Pfister, Karen Katsos, Larry Lynch and Lynn Ditto.

The Pagosa Lakes Ambassadors are incredibly invested in the WAP mission and have done a lot to assist their community in living safely with the threat of wildfire, from organizing Wildfire Prep Day activities and community fuels reduction projects to sharing important wildfire safety information with residents. Over 60 properties in Pagosa Lakes have taken advantage of WAP programs in order to improve the safety of the entire community.

Pictures below show PLPOA residents helping with mitigation activities on the properties of elderly or handicapped neighbors on this year's Wildfire Prep Day.

Reminder: Chipper Rental Rebate Program & Home Wildfire Risk Site Assessments

Don't forget to submit your chipper rental rebate application (available on our website). With two months left, we are over halfway through our funds. So far, we have processed 31 rebates, helping residents treat over 300 acres!

If you are still interested in having a County Coordinator come to your property to complete a wildfire risk site assessment, sign up on our website via the link below.

Stay Safe When Grilling This Summer!

Most families have some kind of grill or smoker on their properties. Grills add flavor to summertime but also increase the risk for home fires. NFPA has provided helpful tips below to stay safe and prevent accidental fires while grilling:

Community Mitigation Project Funding

Does your community have a mitigation project to complete that requires some additional funding? WAP may be able to help you apply for a 50/50 matching grant (cash and/or in-kind). If you're interested in this opportunity, please contact Ashley Downing to find out more.
