Close but No Cigar: a Study on Wildfire's Influence

Utah State University studied the influence of the 416 Fire on local residents and their subsequent mitigation behaviors. This research used Protection Motivation Theory to examine if and how individuals who experience a near-miss wildfire event intend to protect themselves against future risks. Much of the data comes from a survey, completed by 195 residents in Durango, who provided information on their wildfire mitigation activities and perceptions both before and after the 416 Fire.
